2012 Racing

In 2012, members of the Nahant Sailing Program competed in the following regattas:

USODA Team Trials, Brant Beach, NJ(June 11+12):

Conditions: wide variety over 4 days: from low & shifty winds with rain, to sustained winds around 30kn with gusts up to 37kn, to sunny and moderate conditions. A truly challenging regatta with the best 190 sailors from all over the US.

Newport Youth Challenge, Newport, RI (June 23+24):

Conditions: low winds in the morning turned into a nice sea breeze in the middle of the day. Strong current against the wind.

Very close cooperation with the America's Cup World Series made this a very memorable event. Sailors were assigned to the various AC teams and met with the team after the race for an up close interview and to check out the catamarans.

On Sunday all had a chance to look at the original America's Cup (with bodyguards) and take photos of it. Can you find Nick and Max in this official AC video?

2012 USODA Atlantic Coast Championships (ACCs), Little Egg Hbr, NJ (Octover 6+7)

Conditions: windy first day (15-20kn) with warm temperatures (75F), followed by a mid wind (5-12kn) day with low temperatures (55F). Excellent team racing day the day after ACC's directly in the harbor.

Conditions: low winds on the first day, ie very nice fall sailing, followed by a very windy Sunday (caused by Hurrican Sandy)

Conditions: 2 low wind days, followed by 2 mid wind days, warm water, lots of international competition.

Conditions: very windy/rainy, challenging beginning for the season, strong competition

USODA Great Lakes Championships, Buffalo Canoe Club, Ridgeway, Ontario, CANADA:

Conditions: warm and very low winds on saturday, a little more breeze on sunday, first team trials qualifier in North East US, very strong competition

Biggest showing of NSP at any regatta yet - 7 optis!! Nick wins blue fleet and ends up best non-local sailor overall !!

New Bedfort Junior Regatta, New Bedford, MA:

Conditions: sunny, initial low N winds fighting the southerly thermic winds, building in the afternoon. Lots of shifts on Sat, less shifts and more stable northerly on Sun. Long delays between races. Strong competition.

Junior Olympics, Hingham, MA:

Conditions:great sailing, with wide range of conditions, low winds on Wed followed by Thunderstorms in the evening and over night. Strong winds (15-18kn) on Thu, follow by a low breeze on Fri that turned into perfect sailing conditions around noon.

USODA New England Championships, Marion, MA:

Conditions:most likely the largest optimist event in America, 3 great days of sailing on Buzzard's Bay in a highly competitive fleet (3 of the top 5 US sailors participated etc). The fleet of roughly 300 championship boats split into divisions of 100 boats reach and managed to get 13 (!) race done.

Wood Trophy, MIT, MA:

60th Annual Walter 'Jack' Wood Trophy for the Mass Bay Midget Championship

Conditions: The 2011 Wood Trophy was held in light ESE winds that held up until thunderstorms came through at 2 pm after 6 races were completed. After that, the wind refused to fill enough to race.

Tech Dinghies:

Nick Kersten and Max Carbone represented the Nahant Sailing Program at the Mass Bay Midget Championship.

They finished 6th in a fleet of 13.

CORK - Canadian Olympic Regatta Kingston, Kingston, ON:

Conditions: smaller fleet than in prior year, very shifty light winds, tricky sailing conditions at the Canadian Olympic Harbor used for the 1980 games.

Atlantic Coast Championships, Baltimore, MA (Sept 24+25):

Conditions: rain no no wind, no races possible in Championship fleet
